Everyone’s asleep but SmartShift is keeping busy. Prices have dropped across the grid thanks to a fall in demand. With Greg’s battery just a quarter full, SmartShift decides it’s time for a top-up so he’ll wake up with a fuller battery, ready for the morning when prices jump. This top up ends up costing Greg $0.28¢ for 2kWh.
It’s morning time. Like lots of Aussies, Greg and his family are getting ready for work and school, and energy demand is way up. The sun’s still low, so solar generation is yet to reach its daytime peak. Just as SmartShift forecast last night, it’s a great time to sell some of the cheaper, greener energy stored during the night. He’s on track to make $5.52 before 10am, thanks to that morning FiT of 61¢/kWh.
It’s a sunny afternoon and peak solar generation time, as solar systems in Greg’s neighbourhood pump out plenty of cheap, green energy. With the grid getting a large supply of solar, demand for renewables is low and FiTs are too. SmartShift determines it’s a good time to save Greg’s solar for when it’ll be worth more to both him and the grid.
It’s the evening - typically peak time for energy demand across the grid as people return home from work, and solar generation falls off as the sun sets. SmartShift exports Greg’s excess energy so he can take advantage of that 47¢/kWh FiT while displacing fossil fuels with some much needed green energy. He’s made almost $10 so far today and he’ll make another few bucks before the evening ends.
Looking ahead to the morning, SmartShift is forecasting high household usage for Greg, and across the grid. By topping up his battery cheaply now, SmartShift is preparing to cover his morning usage, and sell some excess at high morning FiT.
As well as capturing a 61¢/kWh FiT by exporting now, SmartShift is also making room in Greg’s battery to absorb his excess solar generation later. It knows he'll need room to store that solar as the feed-in tariff is forecast to fall along with the amount of energy he’s using in his home.
While solar generation is peaking now and prices are low, SmartShift™ sees that wholesale prices are forecast to jump later when solar generation drops, demand rises, and more fossil fuels enter the grid. SmartShift™ charges up Greg’s battery from solar, ready to export to the grid during the peak period. He’s expected to get a great FiT, while displacing fossil fuels in the process.
SmartShift™ plans to continue selling Greg’s battery energy to the grid until such time as prices are forecast to drop. After that, his battery energy is worth more to him in your home so preserving it for evening use becomes the priority, so he can avoid high grid usage prices.

Jan Hegarty

“SmartShift’s changed everything for me. 10/10, I would say go with Amber. Because of the environment, the value, and because I actually think they’re a really reputable company. And that integrity really matters to me.”

Darren McCoubrie

NSW

"To anyone who’s got an EV, solar or a battery, I’d say check these guys out. If Amber manages your battery, you’ll be better off. Change is needed and Amber are delivering it."

Gareth

NSW

"With a battery on Amber you can make a lot of money and it’s great fun. When you get the bill you just look at that and smile."

Gaelyne Gasson

SA

“I was going to say it gives me a feeling of control but it really is control.

That makes such a huge difference because, you know, it’s my battery and I really consider that I should have the ability to choose what I do with what’s in it.

SmartShift has made that really work for me and it’s made such a huge difference to my bills.”

Martin McDonald

QLD

“Amber has saved our family a pile of money on energy bills, which is more important than ever during a period of increased cost of living.

Not only do we not pay for an electricity bill any more, but we were in credit to such a level we cashed out enough money to pay for plane tickets for the 4 of us to visit relatives in Sydney."

Mark Purcell

QLD

"Amber’s an effective and efficient way to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, save a whole lot of money, and drive sustainability."

Geoff Jacobs

NSW

“Being with Amber has given us a much better view of what’s happening in the energy market and the ability to take advantage of that. If we have a full battery and there’s a high FiT, we’ll choose to export.

I’d absolutely switch to Amber so you can automate and control your battery.”

Gary Reid

NSW

"We’re really happy with SmartShift. It’s reduced our bills, no doubt about it. While we were overseas recently we had six weeks of high prices where we did a lot of exporting, which was great. And SmartShift’s been clever enough for us to rely on it doing what we want it to do with our battery.

Plus, it helps make things a bit greener for everyone."

Richard Ings

‍ACT

"The battery plus Amber combination is absolutely the way to go if you’re making the investment in a battery. You can buy, sell and use and you’ve got complete control over your power station. It’s financially beneficial, environmentally efficient and it’s a bit of fun."

FAQ

Amber for Batteries is designed to help solar and battery owners maximise the value they can get from their energy set-ups, combining machine learning and control features so you can take full advantage of wholesale pricing.

Exactly how much you will save and earn depends on what’s going on in the energy market, your energy set-up and usage. Price variability in different states plays a part in outcomes - the more variable prices are, the better it is for those with Amber for Batteries as you can take advantage of the difference (you may hear this referred to as “arbitrage”).

When there are price spikes, you can sell energy back to the grid for up to $19/kWh. When wholesale feed-in tariffs drop, SmartShift™ will generally look for ways to store/save your solar or cheap charge from the grid, so you can make the most of low prices and use your stored energy to avoid higher prices.

One of the key drivers of savings with Amber for Batteries is that you get the chance not only to save up and sell your own excess solar energy to the grid when it’s worth the most. You can also charge up your battery with cheap grid power and sell that grid power back to the grid during peak time, to make extra export earnings.

Amber passes on every cent that your energy is worth at the time when you sell it to the grid.

If you want to get a more precise idea of what your savings will be, visit our dynamic pricing page and tell us a bit more about your energy set-up, or check out our customer stories.

You can have as much control as you want with SmartShift™.

This includes the option to charge, export, or preserve your battery as you like with SmartShift™’s control features, or to pick an automation mode that suits your preferences and let SmartShift™ manage your battery optimisation according to your needs.

You can also choose to switch off SmartShift™ completely at any time should you choose, with no penalties whatsoever.

Whether you are taking control of your battery yourself or the battery is being optimised entirely by Amber, you will have in-depth insights into what is happening live with your battery, and what is forecast to happen in the coming day - including what your earnings would be if you take control for a set period of time.

This is designed to help you understand and stay in control of what’s happening with your battery so you can make adjustments if and when you wish.

When it comes to taking advantage of Amber for Batteries’ battery optimisation and wholesale pricing, there are a couple of ways you can do this.

  • Solax

If you do not have any of these batteries, it may be the case that your battery is going to become eligible shortly, so drop us a line and we can give you an update.

In the meantime, we do find that solar and battery customers in general tend to do better with Amber’s wholesale pricing, regardless of automation. This is because having a battery to store your solar means that you have the ability to primarily draw energy from the grid at off-peak times, such as early morning or later evening.

This tends to be when wholesale rates are lower than retail usage rates. As a result, solar and battery owners tend to benefit from a lower average usage rate than they would typically get with a retail energy plan.

At times when wholesale prices rise, for example between 6pm-8pm when energy demand peaks, you can rely on your stored battery energy.
